Intraocular pressure is the pressure inside the eyeball, referred to as intraocular pressure. It is the balanced pressure exerted by the contents of the eye on the wall of the eyeball. The intraocular pressure of a normal person is stable within a certain range to maintain the normal shape of the eyeball and maintain a good refractive state at the interface of each refractive medium. The range of normal intraocular pressure is 10mmHg~21mmHg (1.33kPa~2.80kPa), the difference in intraocular pressure between the eyes should be no more than 5 mmHg, and the intraocular pressure fluctuation should be no more than 8 mmHg in 24 hours.

A tonometer is an instrument that measures the intraocular pressure of a person. It can assist in the diagnosis of cataracts, glaucoma and other eye diseases. A tonometer is usually composed of a corneal shape change generator, a corneal deformation measuring system or a contact corneal device and a pressure change sensor to measure intraocular pressure.

Its working principle is to obtain the intraocular pressure through the change of corneal shape (applanation, indentation, non-contact, etc.) or direct measurement of the pulsating pressure change of corneal blood flow. There are many types of tonometers, including non-contact tonometer, hand-held tonometer, hand-held applanation tonometer, applanation tonometer, contact piezoelectric tonometer, rebound tonometer, Indentation tonometer, etc. The non-contact tonometer is now commonly used. Its advantages such as easy operation, rapid measurement, automatic printing of test results, no direct contact with the eyeball, no topical anesthesia, and no pain for patients, are gradually recognized and accepted by more and more patients.

When the intraocular pressure is abnormal, the optic nerve will be damaged, and symptoms such as decreased vision and blurred vision may occur at night. Many bad habits, excessive eye use, and even some eye diseases can cause elevated intraocular pressure. If you use a tonometer to check that the intraocular pressure is too high, you must find out the real cause of the elevated intraocular pressure and treat it in time.
