Description

Ophthalmic AB Scan refers to the combination of A-scan and B-scan. They use ultrasound principles to examine the eyeball and orbital structures and are one of the most important imaging tools in ophthalmology.

A-scan: Primarily used for precision measurements. It displays the echo of the ultrasound as a vertical crest, and by measuring the distance between the crests, the doctor can accurately calculate key data such as axial length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, etc. These data are the core basis for calculating intraocular lens power before cataract surgery.

B-scan: Primarily used for morphological diagnosis. It generates a two-dimensional fan-shaped cross-sectional image, which can visually display the structures and lesions inside the eyeball and orbit, such as the vitreous, retina, optic nerve, etc.

Inspection Process and Precautions

You usually need to lie on your back during the test. During A-ultrasound examination, the probe will slightly touch the anesthetized surface of the eyeball. During ultrasound, the probe will be applied with a couplant and placed on the skin of the eyelid and sliding, and the doctor will ask you to turn your eyeballs in different directions to observe from multiple angles.

Ophthalmic AB scan is a non-invasive, radiation-free examination method. The surface anesthetic used in A-ultrasound is a routine ophthalmic procedure and has high safety. Except for a slight cooling sensation when applying anesthetic, the examination process itself is painless. The ultrasound probe may feel a slight touch when it slides over the eyelids.
